“Sconosciuto” (The unknown)
This piece is the result of one of the most profound personal journeys I’ve ever taken – a journey inward.
The inspiration came unexpectedly through the work of Art Riddler and His hauntingly “creepy” Instagram posts. His masked figure unsettled me deeply at first. I did’ t understand why – but I kept returning, drawn to the discomfort. Over time, I realized what disturbed me wasn’t his mask…it was mine.
I had been wearing so many masks myself – to be accepted, to fit into expectations, to feel safe. The fear I felt was a mirror. As soon as this realization hit, the vision of this piece came with it. I had the urge to paint so I immediately I took a week off work and dove into painting. Ninety hours later, “Sconosciuto” was born.
It wasn’t just the painting that emerged – it was clarity. This piece marked a shedding, a death of the old versions of myself. The ones shaped by fear, by people-pleasing, by silent survival. It was painful, still is at times , but it was also liberating -still is. With every brushstroke, I let go. I confronted who I’m not and no longer want to be. Got closer to who I truly am and who I want to be.
Since completing this piece, the mask no longer scares me – because I’m not longer hiding behind one.
“Sconosciuto” is not just a painting. It’s the symbol of a rebirth. The beginning of feeling whole. And for this ongoing process I’m forever grateful.
